On November 11th, Tommy received news that he would be departing for Iraq the following week. Unfortunately, that gave him little time to say goodbye to his girlfriend, Sara, of four years.
Sara: "I don’t understand why you have to leave so soon. You said it wasn’t until next year, we made plans, and we were going to be together for Thanksgiving. "
Tommy:" I’m sorry. You know I don’t have a say in when I go, and if they need me then it’s my job to be there."
S: "There are others, why you?"
T: "Don’t say that, especially not today. So many men and women have fought to protect our country, today of all days you should know that. I’m fighting for those who have already and cant any more. I’m fighting to keep my home safe."
Tommy and Sara spend the rest of the week together, before Tommy is to be sent away. On their last day together they share one final kiss, and both of them wonder when they will ever see each other again.
