One image that I used as a historical resource is the image pictured to the right. These following works, all which portray a fearful expression, are done by the author/illustrator Stephen Gammel.Middle name- creep.(Except for the last one, which someone posted on my Myspace as a weird joke..) All of these pictures can be found in either Scary Stories to tell in the Dark (1981), Scary Stories to tell in the Dark 2 (1984) or More Scary Stories to tell in the Dark (1999) The majority of his works were done in graphite and charcoals, although some are ink as well. I do believe they are quite possibly the creepiest drawings I have ever seen. I cannot stress this enough. CREEPY. What makes it even worse is that Gammel's profession is author/illustrator of CHILDREN BOOKS. So if you have ever read Wills Mammoth.. yea that's him too! All the Stephen Gammel Pictures were found first in my Scary stories books, but then imaged searched on Google- I couldn't get my scanner to work :(
Last Wednesdays class was a lot of fun. Honestly. It was interesting to try and figure out what a hypogognic was even after you tried to explain it. And on top of that.. what the difference was between it and a hallucination. I didn't think there really was one, but apparently..
It was fun trying to get a group idea going, and we all brained stormed and tried to tackle the six different drawings in a timely fashion. It was really fun (again..fun) to see everyones styles and how they went about the topic. I think our group did a really good job. I personally thought that everyone's, not just our teams, ideas were crazy and funny. Everyone had different ways of interpreting the words they were trying to define. I learned that using charcoal to make a quick sketch was a really good idea. And I also learned that, contrary to my history of the visual arts class, it is really difficult to say that something is not art, especially with all the different styles and ways of going about an idea.
:]
